I love September, breathing a sigh of relief as routines return, along with the comforting rhythms of daily life.

It’s also the season of fresh starts - so welcome to my new newsletter. Here you’ll find previews of recent projects, articles and updates from my own garden here in Wiltshire.

GARDENING ON THE EDGE

Those of you who follow me on Instagram will be familiar with this one; the Milking Parlour in Berkshire. It’s not really a garden in the traditional sense; yes, its a cultivated space, and it’s designed with beauty in mind, but its sandwiched between a farmyard and fields. It’s very much an in between place.

It’s not used all the time, sometimes going days without a human visitor; and perhaps that adds to the feeling that you’ve stumbled across something secret and hidden.

These new photos were taken on a beautiful summer’s day in July, by one of the best garden photographers working today - Éva Németh. You can see lots more of Éva’s glorious images on my website here.

GRASSES

CATCHING THE LIGHT

Calamagrostis brachytricha is one of my favourite grasses. I’ve planted 15 in our front garden to provide structure and vertical interest. It moves in the breeze and catches the beautiful September light, and will hopefully look good all through winter.

CHOCOLATE COSMOS

I bought these Cosmos atrosanguineuas for a photoshoot at a client’s house - and am delighted they actually ended up coming home with me. They’re floating above Lithitoma axillaris just outside my back door - and the combination of blues and deep velvety browns is bringing me a lot of joy.

KITCHEN GARDEN

A GLUT OF RUNNER BEANS

Growing too much of one thing: classic schoolgirl error. Luckily I’ve found a good pickling recipe - and much to my delight my three year old takes after his mother and loves anything vinegary. We should have finished the beans by next spring, ready to go again.

SHARE AND SPREAD THE LOVE

We are all connected through our gardens and the land we care for, and I find that thought both reassuring and hopeful.
